2026 Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination in Irrigation Water, Soils and Plants to the Tigris River in Al-Aziziyah city, middle Iraq. The manscript will be published in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science (ISSN:1755-1307E-ISSN:1755-1315).
Plants grown in contaminated site can expose consumers health to danger, The aim of this work is to evaluate the contamination with heavy metals in part of Tigris River, soil, plants in agricultural lands located on the both side of the Tigris River and irrigated from this river, during autumn 2022 to summer 2023 . Twelve samples of irrigation water, 12 samples of soil and 12 samples of plants as malt, clovers and celery, were taken and analyzed by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer to find the concentration of some heavy metals as Pb, Cd, Ni and Zn. The results show that the mean concentration of Pb, Cd, Ni and Zn in irrigation water was 0.0535, 0.00215,0.0149 and 0.437 mg/l respectively, and more than the acceptable level for International standard (WHO,2020) and Iraqi standard (ICS, 2011) while the average concentration of Ni in soil was 93 mg/kg which is more than WHO limit. The results of plants show that the average concentration of Pb in all samples was more than WHO limit, it was 0.48, 0.685 and 0.54 mg/kg in malt, celery and clovers respectively, therefore the increasing of consumption for this contaminated plants by community could cause health problems in the future. The results of the chemical characteristics of the soils, showed that the pH values were natural ranging between 7.3 - 8.04, while the values of EC and salinity was variation ranged between 7.05- 19.6 ds.m-1and 0.004-0.012 ppt. Depending on the values of CaCO3 high recorded during the study period 28 - 37 % all types of studied Soil are regarded calcareous. And values of organic matter was low ranged between 1.9 - 3.0 %. The results of the chemical characteristics of the river water in the study areas showed that the pH values of ranged from 7.06 - 8.13, while EC ranged between 796 - 1439 µS/c. As for TDS was ranging between 509.44 - 920.96 mg/l.
